In 1977, Protestant Cay was designated by U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service as one of two protected critical habitats (and only commercial cay) for the endangered St. Croix Ground Lizard—recognized as one of the rarest lizards in the world and numbered under 200 on Protestant Cay. Visitors are very fortunate to be able to see these beautiful lizards on a daily basis. Most endangered species are not so easy to find!

Hotel on the Cay guests also enjoy a variety of sea birds: cattle egrets, blue heron, brown pelicans and the rare white-crowned pigeon which has recently taken up residency among the palms and mahogany trees. An amazing natural garden of Agave eggersiana plants, which will soon be designated as Endangered by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, has been uncovered on the north slope.

A small, pristine beach overlooks Christiansted Harbor’s beautiful boats, which makes for perfect photos at sunset. As the only beach in downtown Christiansted, you will find not only other hotel guests but also locals who enjoy swimming and snorkeling the amazing undersea world surrounding the cay (expect to see octopus and spotted eagle rays). Water sport rentals are available on-site.

Emerald Point Villa, recently renovated honeymoon/executive suite on the easternmost point, offers guests a private, one-bedroom house with fully appointed kitchen surrounded by amazing ocean views. Perfect for honeymooners or other privacy-seekers, it is the perfect hideaway just minutes from the Christiansted boardwalk.

If your idea of a Caribbean vacation includes sunset, white sand and the simple phrase “No problem…” this is the place for you. We are neither a chain nor luxury hotel. We are a 53 room historic hotel: half of the rooms are timeshare owned for 30+ years and the rest of the regular hotel rooms/suites are retro comfy with a tropical vibe. Renovation of the hotel’s infrastructure began in the spring of 2010 including air-conditioning, wiring, plumbing, cisterns and exterior lighting. Hotel bathroom renovation was completed in all rooms ending in 2013.

In the meanwhile, make your way to Hotel on the Cay for the best vacation value in the Caribbean. Bring your swimsuit, hat, sun block (preferably coral-friendly/biodegradable), camera and flip-flops. Hotel on the Cay will provide endless sunshine, bright turquoise seas teeming with life, refreshing trade winds and a place to lay your head at the end of each memorable day.
